Haunted Stories for a Haunted October

The haunting of Tilley bend cemetery

In the quiet hills outside Blue Ridge sits Tilley Bend Cemetery, a small, unassuming place with one of the region’s darkest tales tied to it. At first glance, it looks like any other old mountain graveyard, but its history carries whispers of grief, betrayal, and curses that have never been forgotten by the locals.

The story centers on Elizabeth Bradley who lived there in the 1800s. She was a woman of her time, but also one who drew suspicion from her neighbors. Some thought she knew too much about herbs and remedies, others said she could predict the weather or cure an ailment with little more than a touch. In a community already marked by superstition and deep-rooted feuds, it didn’t take much for those talents to be twisted into the word witch. And not in a good way.

Elizabeth’s daughters married into two families who had been at odds for years. The marriages might have united them, but instead the tension grew worse. Blue Ridge was, and still is a small town, but it wasn’t a Hallmark movie in the making, so we’re not talking Good Witch here!

One of Elizabeth’s daughters died during childbirth, and her grief was understandably unbearable. Rumor has it she cursed both families that day, vowing that none of them would find peace. Whether she truly spoke those words or whether the story grew out of gossip, no one can say for certain. What is clear is that the feud deepened, and soon after, Elizabeth herself was accused of witchcraft.

The punishment was swift and cruel. Elizabeth was hanged in the very cemetery that would become her final resting place. It is said her body was buried in unconsecrated ground, a mark of shame meant to silence her name. Instead, it only gave her story strength.

Over the years, visitors to Tilley Bend have told of eerie experiences that have been said to strengthen Elizabeth’s restless spirit. Some hear the faint cries of a baby across the grounds and bring a constant reminder of the daughter who died in childbirth. Others see strange lights, like glowing orbs drifting among the graves. And more than a few have felt a sudden tug at their legs, as if a small hand reached out from the ground. That one has always given me the creeps!

For many, the tale of Elizabeth Bradley is more than a ghost story. It’s a story of how grief, fear, and old grudges can twist a community and destroy a person from the inside out. Whether she was truly a witch or simply a woman caught in the crossfire of family drama, her presence still lingers at Tilley Bend. Standing there among the worn headstones, it’s easy to imagine the past pressing close, waiting to be heard.
